Should i buy axe fx
You'll read about more people switching from the Axe to the Kemper than the other way around, from what I've seen. I even prefer my Helix to the Axe FX. There is nothing I can't do on the Helix that I did on the Axe, it sounds great too. The Kemper is my best bit of kit though, each to their own, but Kemper wins every time. The Axe will also allow infinite, excessive editing features, which mostly I doubt anyone would need. A chap could get bored with the constant knob twiddling one can do, and never actually play.
Endless parameters of effects to adjust. If you are into all that sort of stuff, then fair enough. The Kemper is a 'no nonsense' unit, which does everything I demand, and with ease of use. IMHO, an update is nothing I need, it does it all already. Now my Kemper? I love that! For recording, do you really want to record with lots of effects or add in post recording??? Just a thought With regards to a Kemper 2, there has been many debates on that.
At present it seems unlikely to appear imminently I would expect an Axe 4 before a Kemper 2. I'd get a Kemper and buy a really nice guitar as well! Not that the Axe doesn't sound good because it does. But I found there was too much tweaking to do on an Axe FX and it is definitely more complicated than Kemper in my opinion.
But the big one for me would be resale value Especially because you're not sure. At the minute, Axe FX units seem to be a lot harder to sell and they seem to depreciate in value a lot more than Kempers in England at least. And as mentioned above, for the price of the Axe 3, you can buy a Kemper and have change to buy a guitar or even something else.
Ultimately, I have felt more inspired playing a Kemper. We want the effect that Vai used. We want Eddie's secret sauce. Modeling promised an affordable, all-encompassing utility to capture, reproduce and re-imagine the greats of guitar signal greatness. But there were question marks. Revisions were made, products developed, endorsements sought and provided.
Amp modeling had broken through the technical barrier into the inner sanctum of guitar signal processing in the ears of those whose opinions we trusted to validate the emergence of modeling as legitimate. One by one the famous artists embraced their famous tones through modeling, and their fans just kept on coming. Was it a tube stack? A fridge-sized rack monster? You surely couldn't get decades of guitar signal processing and amplification nuance in one single box overnight. Attention to detail is overwhelming, audio purity is astounding and creative options are boundless.
It's like walking into your guitar hero's studio and firing up their rig. But it's every hero, every rig, every mainstream and obscure detail to be tweaked to their or your requirements. The unit is dynamic and flexible, and there are a host of online resources and communities to assist, backed by a developer famous for their commitment to their customers re product development and improvement future-proofing with firmware and software updates , as well as a loyal user base intent on sharing ideas, patches, and how-to's.
The amp modeling and FX processing supply tone for days, and the technological capacity and after-market support provide scope for seemingly endless opportunity to sculpt as distinct or recognisable guitar tone as one desires. Do not gig. Gear stays at home. As a result of a serious gear addiction I have 4 great amps and 10 decent ones. All tube.
I do not record currently other than rhythm tracks to play over. Keeping 2 amps 2 cabs and 5 pedals. The price is right now and I no longer want a warehouse full of gear as a hobby player. Right now I am not recording just playing. But I want it to sound the best it can but do not want to pay money where I do not need it if the extra stuff is mainly for recording. Its cheaper to buy the extras on sale and combine shipping at one time. I was wondering about the expression pedal but I already have good wah wah pedal that I can put into the unit for just that effect and dont need to change things on the fly as I do not gig for modulation effects etc.
Basically would you recommend buying anything else you feel is a must have with the unit for my uses?
I know there are variables and maybe not perfect answers but just looking for honest opinions for my situation. Thank you for any input! You can just use headphones and have fun but to get the best results, I recommend an FRFR monitor so you can really hear the amp and cab simulations. I use the Mission Gemini II 2x12 for live gigs.
It's great but might be too much for home use. There are some good 1x12 FRFR monitor options out there. The other way to monitor is to use a solid state amp and cab. Lots of folks use Matrix power amps and some sort of cab. You have plenty of cabs so you could try them and see which one works best.
So you would only need the power amp. You could also use the Axe III as an effects only unit and run it through the effects loop of one of your amps or use the 4-cable method. For me, that would be a shame since the real strength of the Axe III is the great amp sims.
They are spectacular so I suggest finding the best way to use the amp sounds and have fun with it. This forum is excellent and can provide a lot of great practical info for getting the most out of the unit. Best of luck.
I would get a pair of the best frfr wedges you can afford for the stereo out, and a nice power amp to power one of the cabs you already have for the dry signal. Instant glorious satisfaction! I am looking to get everything I can out of the unit including the cab simulators and amp models.
