When talking about trucks what is payload

With the Ram heavy-duty pickup, the maximum fifth-wheel towing capacity of 31, lbs goes to a model with a regular cab and two-wheel drive — certainly not the most popular truck configuration these days. That said, there are numerous other factors that go into the capacity numbers, and the differences between similarly-sized models can be relatively small.

There are some other numbers you might see. The Gross Axle Weight Rating GAWR indicates how much weight can be put over the front or rear wheels; that front-axle number is important when calculating how large of a snow plow can be bolted to the front of the truck. Towing and payload ratings are never an exact science. Still, ratings are better than they were.

Up until recently, not all manufacturers followed standardized towing tests, and ultra-beefy capacity numbers could be the result of biased testing. The tests include launching on a steep grade, towing in extreme heat, and braking and handling, with each truck tested under the same conditions.
