My wife and I were on the final stage of our tour of Australia which was a drive of km from Brisbane to Port Douglas over 8 days with stopovers as and when the mood took us at the end of each day.
We had left Hervey Bay making our way towards our as yet undetermined next stop but making for the general direction of Bundaberg.
It was a warm, sunny day and we decided to make a detour to Woodgate Beach where we spent an hour or so. We found a beautiful sandy beach and calm, blue sea with hardly anyone around.
Residential homes straddled the uncluttered sea front road with magnificent views across the ocean. We thought how lucky the owners were to live in the tranquillity of this remote oasis but wondered how different it might be in the peak of the holiday season. We then strolled along the beach for a while spotting a starfish on the sand although all life had gone from it.
It was time to move on but how glad we were that we had taken time out to make this detour. Read more. DanandLisa Brisbane, Australia contributions. Our family were hoping for a completely chilled holiday, with a bit of action mixed in.
Woodgate Beach is perfect for that. It is a sleepy beach village, with nothing but a long pristine beach, and mostly well kept beach houses along the esplanade, with a few shops mixed in. The shops are quaint and bat well above their league. We thought the pub was great, take away alcohol was reasonably priced and food and drinks really tasty.
They have a small supermarket, a cracker of a little hardware store, a bowls club, a couple of convenience stores and a few other services too. Most accommodation is self contained and there are a lot of campers also, so most tourists are cooking their own meals here.
Woodgate caters well to those that don't intend to cook also, but if you are cooking it's probably best to do a big grocery shop in a proper supermarket in Bundaberg 45mins. There is not much in the way of public transport so you need access to your own vehicle to visit Woodgate properly. We spent our days swimming, going for walks along the beach with the occasional cafe stop, 4wd exploring and beach driving, fishing, catching crabs and fish in tidal pools with nets, kayaking, it was so relaxing and fun.
You can bring your dog to most places. We also used Woodgate as a base for some more activities. A fifty minute drive to Bundaberg and we visited the Great Barrier Reef. We spent a couple of days seeing nearby towns, swimming and getting fish and chips on the beach.
And Fraser Island and Hervey Bay are close too. The list of native animals we have seen on our two week holiday includes: whales, giant sea turtles, dolphins, kangaroos, echidnas, emus, sharks safe ones at the reef , a massive sea snail, seas of soldier crabs at low tide, fish galore grunter, bream and toadfish caught, countless other fish seen as well.
If you are looking for high end shopping, gelato and top class barista's you won't find it here. But if you are hoping to have a relax, re-acquaint with nature and see some really cool stuff, Woodgate Beach is a great option. Super friendly welcome. How lovely, set the tone and, as we discovered, reflects the relaxed, warm culture of the park.
